MFE Program Overview: 2020-2021

The MFE is a world-class limited-enrollment professional program offered by the University of Toronto’s Department of Economics in collaboration with the Rotman School of Management. It provides a broad understanding of financial theory and the economics framework upon which that theory is based. Students are equipped with the knowledge and tools required to build successful careers in finance through both the classroom and work experience in the financial services sector.

First Semester (“Fall”)
Professional development + five core courses

  • “Professional Development” (required; begins one and a half months prior to the start of the Fall academic session)
  • Math-Stats Review (required Economics MA course; begins three weeks prior to the start of the Fall academic session)
  • Corporate Financing II (required Rotman MBA course)
  • Econometrics (required Economics MA course)
  • Financial Economics I (required Economics MA course)
  • Options and Futures (required Rotman MBA course)

Second Semester (Winter)
One core course + three electives

  • Microeconomics (required Economics MA course)
  • Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course
  • Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course
  • Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course

Third Semester (Summer)
Mandatory four-month internship at a financial services firm

Fourth Semester (Fall)
One core courses + two electives

  • Macroeconomics (required Economics MA course)
  • Security and Portfolio Analysis (required Rotman MBA course)
  • Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course
  • Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course

Notes:

  • Each MA and MBA course is equivalent to 0.5 FCE
  • The finance internship is equivalent to 1.0 FCE
  • At least three electives must be MA/PhD Economics courses
