A Just Transition for Energy Sector Workers in the Clean Energy Transition

with Francis Fong

The shift to net zero needed to combat climate change will feature a dramatic shift in how the world produces and consumes energy. The movement towards renewable energy and clean fuels, while a significant opportunity for Canada, will naturally result in a rotation away from fossil fuels with respect to skilled labour and investment. Those workers and communities dependent on fossil fuel industries are likely to face significant dislocation, resulting in the need for policies aimed at ensuring a just transition for those who will bear a disproportionate burden of the clean energy transition.
