Program Overview
The MFE is a world-class limited-enrollment professional program offered by the University of Toronto’s Department of Economics in collaboration with the Rotman School of Management. MFE is a full-time only program of approximately 18 months in duration, starting early July. There is one admission only, in July of each year. We do not admit students in January or September. All program requirements must be completed within three years of the initial enrolment in the program.
Notes:
- Each MA and MBA course is equivalent to 0.5 FCE
- The MFE Internship is equivalent to 1.0 FCE
- MFE students must take five electives of which at least three electives must be ECO courses and at most two electives can be RSM courses.
First Semester (Summer: July – August)
Path 1 & 2: Professional development + one core course
- Professional Development (required training)

Second Semester (Fall: September – December)
Path 1 & 2: Five core courses
- Core Course: ECO1010 Math-Stats Review (0.5 FEC; begins three weeks prior to the start of the Fall academic session)
- Core Course: ECO1500 Financial Microeconomics (0.5 FEC)
- Core Course: ECO1400 Econometrics (0.5 FEC)
- Core Course: RSM2300 Corporate Financing II (0.5 FEC)
- Core Course: RSM2306 Options and Futures (0.5 FEC)
Third Semester (Winter: January – April)
Path 1 (Recommended): four electives
- Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course (0.5 FEC)
- Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course (0.5 FEC)
- Elective: a MA/PhD Economics course or a Rotman MBA course (0.5 FEC)

Path 2 (Alternative): winter internship

Fourth Semester (Summer: May – August)

Degree Completion & Conferral
To complete the program, a student must pass (receive at least a B–) in each course taken. If all the program requirements are completed by December, the students can choose to graduate in absentia in March or at the convocation ceremony in June.
OSAP Terms
Year 1: Summer/Fall/Winter (July 4, 2023 – April 30, 2024)
Year 2: Summer/Fall (May 1, 2024 – December 19, 2024)
